Der Blaue Engel aka The Blue Angel
Director: Josef Von Sternberg, Germany, 1930, 106, minutes, 16mm Professor Immanuel Rath is an unmarried old school teacher at a boys' high school. A fter discovering his students passing around naughty postcards of a sexy cabaret singer, Lola Lola, he visits the nightclub where she works. Upon seeing Lola Lola, he becomes infatuated with her and begins making decisions that will change his life. The Blue Angel is the film that launched the International career of screen goddess Marlene Dietrich. Playing a vampish chanteuse, Dietrich delivers a commanding performance as she flaunts her body, not like a tart, but like a school girl. At the time I thought the film was awful and vulgar and I was shocked by the whole thing. I was a well brought up German girl Marlene Dietrich. Internet Movie Database listing
