Director: Andreas Dresen, Germany, 2002, 105 minutes, 16mm

Two acquainted thirtysomething couples, Uwe & Ellen and Chris & Katrin, live in Frankfurt/Ober. They occasionally meet in the evenings but nothing exciting ever happens. One day Chris looks deeply into Ellen's eyes while buying perfume for his wife. Later Chris and Ellen embark on an affair. When Ellen confesses to her husband that she has fallen in love with another man, he is totally stunned. The acting is so precise and believable, you may have trouble accepting that it was entirely improvised.

The film's special quality lies in the warmth and precision with which its characters are described. Everyone of the four protagonists has a very personal life. They all have trouble putting their problems into words, but this too is an indication of Dresen's precise observation, for people's fortunes are expressed in what they do and not in self-portrayals. - Ulrich von Thuna, Goethe Institut.
