Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey

publicity image

Director. Vincent Ward, New Zealand, 1988, 92 Minutes, 16mm

In fourteenth century England, the inhabitants of a small village await the arrival of the plague. Fearing for their lives, they hit upon the obvious solution: dig a hole through to the other side of the world. Guided by a young boy's visions, they amazingly succeed in this task. Even more amazingly, they surface in twentieth century New Zealand. It is an absorbing allegorical tale, though it is up to the audience to decide what that allegory is.

A willing suspension of disbelief (or the kind of unquestioning faith that the main characters have) never hurts when watching something like this, but if you're in the right frame of mind, this fable will gradually draw you into its tantalizing meditation on faith, mystery, and imagination. - imdb.com
