Die Polizistin aka The Policewoman
Director: Andreas Dresen, Germany, 95 mins, 16mm (1.66:1) A district made up of prefabricated concrete blocks in the East-German port city of Rostock. Anne Kruger has recently retrained to be a policewoman and this is her first posting. She finds herself caught between disillusioned, sometimes vindictive residents, and cynical colleagues who can't quite remember why they took the job. Anne tries to locate the middle course between the city's need for the police to do good and the need for them to keep it under strict control, but in her loneliness she finds herself attracted to a petty criminal. It may sound grim, but Dresen steers his own middle path between misery and cosmetic touching-up, resulting in a film that is both exciting and sympathetic. Internet Movie Database listing
