Runaway

Screening: Monday 5 March, 6:30pm

Runaway (John O'Shea, New Zealand 1964)

A nightmare chase across the scenic splendour of a wild continent. Visually striking work about a teenage boy who is dissatisfied with his life and runs away across the whole of New Zealand, stealing cars and discarding girlfriends along the way, ending up on top of a glacier facing only himself. O'Shea, a former Wellington Film Society regular, has fashioned an amazingly original work that showcases his native country in a truly breathtaking way. This is considered the most “European” of his films, imbued with the style of Antonioni and Godard. (35mm, B&W, 102 mins)
