The World of Apu

Screening: Monday 25 August, 6:30pm

Apu Sansar (Satyajit Ray, India 1958)

The young man Apu, after resigning from university for lack of funds and giving up his dream of being a writer, travels to the wedding of his friend’s cousin and ends up a groom. The groupings and photography bring a masterly density to a scene whether it is Apu’s grimy Calcutta lodgings, the romantic river journey, or the parched landscape where Apu and his friend Pulu meet.

Contains one of the most beautiful love affairs in all of cinema. – John Gillett, Sight & Sound

(16mm, B&W, 106 mins, Bengali with English subtitles, G)
