Chaplin plays the dastardly cad in the Mack Sennett farce Tillie’s Punctured Romance, one of his earliest appearances, complete with pie fight and the Keystone Kops’ unique approach to law enforcement. Complemented by Chaplin two-reelers, The Tramp and The Adventurer.
Tillie’s Punctured Romance, USA 1914. This slapstick comedy with the Keystone Kops and Charlie Chaplin was made as a vehicle for the star, Marie Dressler, who achieved fame on the musical comedy Broadway stage. Dressler is Tillie Banks, the ungainly farm girl that city slicker con man Charlie Chaplin woos on his trek to the country to find some easy money.
The Tramp, USA 1915. The film that marked the beginning of The Tramp character most known today, even though Chaplin played the character in earlier films. This film marked the first departure from his more slapstick character in the earlier films, with a sad ending and showing he cared for others, rather than just himself. The film co-stars Edna Purviance as the farmer's daughter and Ernest Van Pelt as Edna's father.
The Adventurer, USA 1917. Chaplin plays an escaped convict on the run from prison guards. He falls into favor with a wealthy family after he saves a young lady (Edna Purviance) from drowning, but her suitor (Eric Campbell) does everything he can to have Chaplin apprehended by the officials.
